Surrounding the Swamp Cottage, the Florida Everglades, Big Cypress National Preserve, Shark Valley and Ten Thousand Islands are just some of the wild and wonderful ecosystems that provide plenty of sightseeing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, airboat and swamp buggy tours. Observe alligators, herons, bald eagles, spoonbills, white-tailed deer, bobcats and the endangered Florida panther. You will also see exotic plant life such as wild orchids, bromeliads and cypress, to name just a few, that grow abundantly here.

Close by, in Everglades City, you can eat at one of the many excellent seafood restaurants, take boat tours through the Mangrove Tunnels and the Ten Thousand Islands, rent kayaks, canoes or chartered airboat rides or visit the historic Chokoloskee Island.

Naples, about an hour away, offers plenty of shopping, from small boutiques and shops to the large chain and department stores plus fine and casual dining with many flavorful culinary experiences.
Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk

Located on Tamiami Trail in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, the boardwalk meanders through the environment of Fakahatchee where you can see gators, birds and an occasional deer.

The Oasis Visitor Center can give you information about hiking trails, canoe trips, and the environment within the Big Cypress National Preserve. There is also a boardwalk where a great number of large alligators can be seen.
Big Cypress Swamp Visitors Center

The Big Cypress Visitor Center is an information center about the entire ecosystem of the Big Cypress Swamp. They can give you information about hiking trails, canoe trips, and camping areas, as well as many other happenings within the area. There is also a board walk where a great number of alligators and birds can be seen
Gator Hook Trail
5 miles west of gallery, then turn onto Loop Rd and travel 2 miles down Loop Rd.
Loop Road is a dirt road that is well maintained up to Gator Hook.
The Gator Hook trail is a beautiful walk on an old logging railroad bed that can be followed for several miles. For more information stop by the Oasis Vistior Center.
Jonies Crab Shack

A historic building, Joanie's has been around ever since we have lived here. On the weekends she normally has live entertainment.
Kirby Storter Boardwalk

A pleasant walk along the boardwalk takes you through saw grass prairie and into a cypress strand, ending at a pond. You can see birds, gators and an occassional otter if you're lucky. It is a peaceful and beautiful walk.

The Everglades Visitor Center welcomes you to Everglades City (3 miles south down Hwy 29). This is the Chamber of Commerce for Everglades City and the surrounding area with information on the restaurants, hotels, boat rides, canoe & kayak trips, swamp buggy rides and airboat rides.
H.P. Williams Wayside
15 miles west of the gallery on the corner of Turner River Road and Tamiami Trail
Picnic benches and a boardwalk make for a wonderful stopping place along the trail. You can see birds and gators from the boardwalk. If you're adventurous, you can travel down the dirt Turner River Road and enjoy the scenery.
Skunk Ape Headquarters

Known for being the Skunk-Ape Research Headquarters, this is a unique place to visit. (Skunk-Ape is in the same family as Big Foot) The Skunk-Ape Headquarters has a collection of exotic birds and reptiles. They also give pole boat trips into Big Cypress. It is a great place to get a picture of your self with their giant Florida Panther statue.
Turner River Canoe and Kayak Launch

A great place to launch your canoe or kayak to go north or south on the Turner River. For more information about canoe trips on the river you can contact the Oasis Visitor Center or the Everglades Visitor Center on the corner of Tamiami Trail and Hwy 29.
Ochopee Post Office

Known as the smallest post office (7'3" x 8'4") in the United States, it opened in 1932. It had been located in a general store until the store burned down in 1953. The present structure had been the tool shed. After the fire it was pulled closer to the road and used as a Post Office.
Sweetwater
8 miles down Loop Road
From Gator Hook to Sweetwater the road is rough and not well maintained. Drive at your own risk.
Sweetwater is a large stream that runs through Big Cypress National Preserve. Gator's and birds can be seen there when the water is low. For more information visit the Oasis Visitor Center.
